Compress PDFs without quality loss, understand file size trade-offs, and learn when to use different compression levels.
Compression is usually a delivery problem
Most people compress because a portal, email limit, or upload form rejected the file. The real question is how small the file must become without breaking the pages people still need to read.
Text PDFs and scan PDFs behave differently
Born-digital PDFs often shrink through font and object cleanup. Scan-heavy PDFs usually shrink through image recompression, which is where readability loss becomes visible first.
When compression is not the right first move
If the file is long but only a few pages matter, split first. If the text is not searchable, OCR may matter more than size reduction. Compression helps most when the whole file still needs to travel together.
